<p><strong>1. What is Acai?</strong></p>
<p>Acai is a South American palm tree producing small edible blackish-purple berries that look similar to blueberries.</p>
<p><strong>2. What are the health benefits of Acai?</strong></p>
<p>Acai berries contain fiber, heart healthy fats and are higher in antioxidants then other common berries such a strawberries, blueberries and cranberries.</p>
<p><strong>3. Is your Acai organic?<br />
</strong><br />
Yes! All of the fruit that we offer at Kindbelly Cafe is organic. Unfortunately, not all of our toppings and liquid bases are organic at this time, but some are! So, if your looking for a fully organic Acai experience, just ask! We are happy to help make it happen.</p>
<p><strong>3. Is Acai sweet?</strong></p>
<p>It depends! We offer both sweetened and pure fruit blends that make the base of your bowl. Of course, an Acai bowl will always have some sugar content because of the sugar that naturally occurs in the fruit but, we do offer a version that is free of added sugar. Bottom line, Acai can be delicious for breakfast and dessert!</p>
<p><strong>5. What&#8217;s in it?</strong></p>
<p>We use organic Acai puree packs that are either pure Acai berries or a blend of Acai puree, organic cane sugar, and less than %0.5 of: organic soy lecithin, organic guarana extract, and citric acid. Our basic bowl, the Plane Jane, takes which ever puree pack you would like and blends it with with organic frozen blueberries, organic banana, and a liquid base to create a frozen fruit puree that can be further mixed with any other toppings that we offer, and topped again for a little extra crunch.</p>

<p>Don’t get us wrong, we’re not ones to hate on a great Cup of Joe, but depending on coffee to get you through the day is no way to maintain a reliable energy level. If you’re chugging two or three cups of coffee in the morning, and then an iced brew or latte during that mid-afternoon lull, it’s time to reevaluate where you’re getting your energy.</p>
<p>If you’ve become dependent on the caffeine rush to power through the work day, no worries! There are a number of natural foods that can offer energy, and they’ll do it in a way so you don’t have the caffeine jitters, you’ll have more balanced energy throughout the day, and there’s no post-coffee crash.</p>

<p>You would be hard-pressed to go a day without coming into contact with something made of cotton – from your clothes, bed sheets, diapers, or even some of the food you eat – the fiber is all around us. In fact, cotton makes up 50 percent of the world’s fiber needs, but the majority of it is grown with toxic chemicals. Growing conventional cotton requires the use of pesticides, which is not only bad for the environment, but also poses huge health risks to those working with the crops.</p>
<p>Organic cotton is grown without using toxic pesticides or fertilizers, according to the <a href="http://www.ota.com/organic/mt/organic_cotton.html">Organic Trade Association</a>. Farmers who grow organic cotton can use only approved methods for producing the crop including: beneficial insect releases, strip cutting of alfalfa and new weeding machinery, all of which reduce the impact on the environment.</p>
<p><strong>Popularity Is Growing</strong></p>
<p>As we learn more about the negative impacts toxic chemicals can have on our environment, there’s a strong response to be responsible and minimize the damage for future generations. The production of organic cotton speaks to that awareness. In 2004, the Organic Trade Association reports 6,814 bales of organic cotton were harvested in the United States, which is about 3.2 million pounds. Fast forward a decade, and approximately 18,030 bales of organic cotton fiber were harvested in 2015.</p>
<p>In the U.S., the <a href="https://www.ota.com/advocacy/fiber-and-textiles/get-facts-about-organic-cotton">organic cotton industry</a> reached $43.3 billion in 2015, an increase of 11 percent from the previous year’s record level.</p>
<p><strong>Why buy organic?</strong></p>

<p>Non-organic cotton is one of the most chemical dependent crops worldwide. <a href="http://www.onegreenplanet.org/environment/organic-cotton-is-better-option-for-you-and-the-planet/">OneGreenPlanet.org</a> says non-organic cotton uses up nearly 10% of all agricultural chemicals period, especially insecticide, of which it uses 25% for all crops worldwide. The workers harvesting these crops can experience detrimental health conditions as a result of the chemicals.</p>

<p>You may actually be shopping from stores and brands that already support the organic cotton market, but if not, it’s time to jump on the bandwagon. The Top 10 users of organic cotton in 2015 were C&amp;A, H&amp;M, Tchibo, Inditex, Nike, Decathlon, Carrefour, Lindex, Williams-Sonoma, and Stanley &amp; Stella, reports <a href="https://www.ota.com/advocacy/fiber-and-textiles/get-facts-about-organic-cotton">OTA</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Protect the planet</strong></p>
<p>Producing and growing cotton organically help protect the health of people and the planet through less use of toxic chemicals, reducing the risk in the air, ground, water, and food supply. When comparing organic cotton production to conventional, a <a href="https://www.ota.com/advocacy/fiber-and-textiles/organic-cotton/cotton-and-environment">Textile Exchange life</a> cycle analysis shows:</p>
<ul>
<li>Organic cotton produced in 2013-14 saved the equivalent of nearly 95,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools of fresh water compared to non-organic production.</li>
<li>The energy saved in that period could have kept a 60-watt light bulb going for over 57,000 years.</li>
<li>The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions was the equivalent of driving a car around the world over 14,000 times.</li>
</ul>
<p>Most of the demand for organic cotton comes from manufacturers and brands that value environmental and social responsibility goals. These companies are also listening to customers who want sustainable, chemical-free fiber, clothing, and home goods.</p>

<p>The summer heat can take its toll on your body. Staying hydrated is ultra-important, especially during the scorching months when the heat index can reach triple digits, but guzzling water can get old (we totally understand). Adding some flavor to your H2O not only makes rehydrating more enjoyable, but there are a number of recipes that can give you a health boost as well!</p>
<p><strong>Strawberry Mint</strong></p>
<p>There are few things more refreshing than the invigorating burst of fresh mint. Try strawberry mint water by grabbing:</p>
<ul>
<li>6 – 8 sliced strawberries</li>
<li>1 cup of mint leaves</li>
</ul>
<p>Add your ingredients to fresh water and ice, shake or stir, and enjoy!</p>
<p><u>Benefit</u>: Mint soothes stomachs in cases of indigestion or inflammation.</p>
<p><strong>Citrus Mint</strong></p>
<p>We simply can’t get enough of fresh mint this summer, but this recipe gives a much different flavors. Gra a pitcher, and add:</p>

<li>2 Sliced Cucumbers</li>

<p><u>Benefit</u>: Grapefruits are known to be great for heart health. Try some fresh red grapefruit for a positive influence on your blood lipid levels, especially triglycerides.</p>
<p><strong>Watermelon Basil</strong></p>
<p>Is there a more official fruit of summer than watermelon? Yeah, we didn’t think so. Add a bit of basil and you have an amazingly fresh, crisp drink.</p>

<li>2 slices of watermelon, cut into thirds or quarters</li>
<li>Small handful of basil, scrunched</li>
</ul>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>The Dirty Dozen &amp; Clean 15 Lists 2017</strong></p>
<p>The Environmental Working Group (EWG) says there are 12 foods that are laden with heavy pesticide residue. The EWG released its Dirty Dozen list in the <a href="https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php">2017 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce</a>, noting that, “Each of these foods tested positive for a number of different pesticide residues and contained higher concentrations of pesticides than other produce.”</p>
<p>In addition to the Dirty Dozen, the EWG also developed a Clean 15 list. The list contains produce least likely to contain pesticide residues. The goal of each report is to inform shoppers of what they are buying and eating. When you walk into you Myrtle Beach organic food market, it’s important to know what you’re buying for your family and what you’re putting into your body.</p>
<p><strong>Dirty Dozen</strong></p>
<p>Here is the EWG Dirty Dozen list, in order:</p>
<ol>
<li>Strawberries</li>
<li>Spinach</li>
<li>Nectarines</li>
<li>Apples</li>
<li>Peaches</li>
<li>Celery</li>
<li>Grapes</li>
<li>Pears</li>
<li>Cherries</li>
<li>Tomatoes</li>
<li>Sweet bell peppers</li>
<li>Potatoes</li>
</ol>
<p>New to the 2017 list are pears and potatoes, removing cherry tomatoes and cucumbers from last year’s Dirty Dozen.</p>
<p>The EWG reports that more than 98% of samples of strawberries, spinach, peaches, nectarines, cherries and apples tested positive for residue of at least one pesticide. Twenty different pesticides were discovered on a single sample of strawberries. The crop that showed the most pesticide residue by weight was spinach, with samples having twice as must pesticide residue by weight than any other crop.</p>
<p><strong>Clean 15</strong></p>
<p>The fruits and vegetables least likely to have remains of pesticide make up the EWG’s Clean 15 list. Only 5% of Clean 15 vegetable samples had two or more pesticides.</p>
<p>Here is the EWG Clean 15 list, in order:</p>
<ol>
<li>Sweet corn</li>
<li>Avocados</li>
<li>Pineapples</li>
<li>Cabbage</li>
<li>Onions</li>
<li>Frozen sweet peas</li>
<li>Papayas</li>
<li>Asparagus</li>
<li>Mangoes</li>
<li>Eggplant</li>
<li>Honeydew</li>
<li>Kiwifruit</li>
<li>Cantaloupe</li>
<li>Cauliflower</li>
<li>Grapefruit</li>
</ol>
<p>Only 1% of avocados and sweet corn samples showed pesticide residue. More than 80% of pineapples, papayas, asparagus, onions and cabbage had no pesticide residues, the EWG reports.</p>
<p>A study by Cynthia Curl of the University of Washington points to the benefit of buying organic foods. The study reports participants who reported that they &#8220;often or always&#8221; buy organic produce had significantly less organophosphate insecticides in their urine samples.</p>
<p>The EWG admits the lists are not based on a complex assessment of pesticide risks, but rather concentrate on giving shoppers the best information possible when it comes to foods that are least and most likely to host pesticide residue and equip you with the information you need to make the best shopping decisions for your family.</p>

<p>Let’s do a six degrees of separation puzzle. You’ve heard of this, right? Six degrees of separation is the theory that every living thing on earth is connected to another through no more than six steps of separation – a “friend of a friend” type connection. Let’s take a look at the six degrees of separation we have as human from bees – yes, the insect you steer clear of and occasionally swat at, even may be allergic to its sting. The reality is, these tiny creatures are hard workers, and a lot of the food we enjoy, is a direct product of a bee.</p>
<h2><strong>Bees &amp; Meat</strong></h2>
<p>Bees are responsible for pollenating the plants and vegetables you would find in an organic food market in Myrtle Beach, but what you may not realize, is they also play a role in the burgers you’ll grill all summer long. Pollination isn’t just important to the organic foods we eat; it plays a vital role in foraging crops – like field beans and clover – that are fed to livestock. We then depend on that livestock for meat.</p>
<h2><strong>Bees &amp; Fruits</strong></h2>
<p>All sorts of fruit and vegetables are pollinated by bees, such as broccoli, squash, apples, and almonds. In fact, nearly one-third of all the food we consume requires pollination. <h2><strong>Bees &amp; Honey</strong></h2>
<p>Honey is likely the food for which bees are best known, and for good reason. <a href="http://www.honey.com/newsroom/press-kits/honey-industry-facts">Honey.com</a> reports the 2013 honey crop was valued at $317.1 million. It’s clear humans are big fans of the sweet nectar bees produce as their winter food. One bee hive, which can range from 10,000 to 60,000 bees, can produce 60 pounds or more of honey in a strong season, but the average hive usually yields about 25 pounds of honey a season.</p>
<h2><strong>Saving The Bees</strong></h2>
<p>Unfortunately, as we build up industries, factories, and new construction neighborhoods, humans are slowly tearing away at the bees’ natural habitat. There are small steps we can all take, though, to help support the survival of these instrumental insects (even if owning a bee farm isn’t your thing).</p>
<p>Growing flowers that are native to your area, and hosting a variety of them in your yard or garden, allowed the many different types of bees to pollenate. When bees emerge in the spring, they have to have nectar and pollen sources to start their colonies. Without these essentials, the bees will continue to die off. So plant a few flowers, keep them blooming every spring, and support these insects that do so much for our food supply.</p>
